As his final hour approached, the unbelieving materialist saw the emissaries of the Lord of Death coming toward him, their eyes bloodshot with rage.
This man, who had devoted himself to providing for his family without any control over his senses, finally died in great pain, seeing his loved ones weeping around him. He died in the most pathetic way, overwhelmed by suffering and devoid of consciousness. As his final hour approached, he saw the emissaries of the Lord of Death coming toward him, their eyes bloodshot with rage. Overwhelmed by fear, he urinated and defecated. Just as a criminal is arrested by the authorities to serve his sentence, the man who had criminally indulged in sensual pleasure was seized by the Yamadutas (the servants of the Lord of Death and judge of the guilty), who bound him by the neck with strong ropes and covered his subtle (ethereal) body to inflict severe punishment. As Yamaraja's agents (the judge of the guilty) lead him away, he trembles in their hands, seized with terror. All along the way, dogs bite him, and he is reminded of the sins of his life. He experiences terrible distress. Under a blazing sun, the wrongdoer must travel along paths of burning sand through scorching forests. His tormentors whip his back when he can no longer walk; hunger and thirst overwhelm him, but unfortunately, this path offers neither water, nor shelter, nor a place to rest.
Along this road that leads him to Yamaraja's abode, he often collapses from exhaustion, and sometimes falls unconscious, but they force him to get up. Thus, he is quickly brought before Yamaraja.
He must thus traverse ninety-nine thousand (99,000) yojanas [that is; [5,766,000,000 kilometers] in two or three moments, after which he is immediately subjected to the tortures he deserves.
He is placed amidst burning pieces of wood, and his limbs are set ablaze. In some cases, he is forced to eat his own flesh, or else it is devoured by others.
His entrails are torn out by the dogs and vultures of hell while he still lives to witness the scene, and snakes, scorpions, mosquitoes, and other creatures bite and torment him.
His limbs are then ripped from his body and shredded by elephants. He is hurled from the tops of mountains and imprisoned underwater or in a cavern.
Men and women who have based their lives on the gratification of illicit carnal desires are placed in all sorts of horrific conditions in the hells known as Tamisra, Andha-tamisra, and Raurava.
It is sometimes said that a person experiences heaven or hell on this very planet (Earth), for infernal punishments are also visible here.
After leaving their body, a person who has provided for themselves and their family through sinful acts must endure a life of hell, along with their loved ones. Alone, they join the dark regions of hell after departing their present body, and the wealth they acquired by envying others is the price they pay for leaving this world.
