What does it mean to be “God conscious”?
Being God conscious means, first and foremost, realizing that Krishna is indeed God, the Supreme Person, the Sovereign Lord, the Absolute Master of all that exists, and that all individual beings distinct from His Divine Person—which each of us truly is, including the powerful celestial beings—are subordinate to Him.
A God conscious being acts with full knowledge of the relationship that unites him or her to the Lord, and the perfection of this knowledge consists of perfectly knowing God, Lord Krishna, the Supreme Person, as He truly is, as well as His glories.
The pure soul, as an integral part and infinitesimal fragment of the Divine Person of God, remains His eternal servant. But as soon as it desires to dominate maya, the illusory material nature, it is seized by it and falls prey to many sufferings.
As long as the soul remains in contact with matter, it must act according to its material needs. However, even in the midst of matter, we can awaken our spiritual consciousness and regain a pure existence. To do this, it is enough to practice God consciousness. The more one progresses on this path, the more one is freed from the clutches of matter. The Lord is impartial; everything depends on the efforts one makes in fulfilling one's duty in order to control one's senses and overcome the influence of lust and anger.
Controlling one's passions allows one to develop God consciousness and attain the spiritual level.
Supreme perfection can be attained through the practice of loving devotional service, which alone allows one to approach God and can give peace to the human being. Loving devotional service offered to God is the pinnacle of perfection.
How can we show God the love we have for Him, and express the attachment we feel to His Divine Person?
By renewing the bond of love that unites us with Krishna, God, the Supreme Person.
By telling Him that we love Him, and that we are absolutely determined to obey Him by promptly doing everything He asks us to do.
By joyfully desiring to fulfill His divine will.
By linking our desires, our plans, and our interests to His.
By joyfully offering Him all the fruits of our actions.
By constantly having thoughts, words, and actions directed towards God, and filled with love for Him.
By asking our children, friends, and acquaintances to live permanently according to the teachings of Krishna, God, the Supreme Person.
By resolving never to separate ourselves from God.
By telling Him that we surrender ourselves completely to Him.
And by taking immense pleasure in serving Him with love and devotion.
