It is the habitat, the body, of a spiritual soul that develops in the mother's womb, and no one has the right, at the stage of embryonic development, to expel the soul from a woman's uterus in which God has placed it.
In truth, each of us is an eternal spiritual soul; we are not the material body in which we reside. The latter is merely a fleshy envelope that covers the soul. In every form of life or living being, human, animal, or plant, resides an eternal individual soul.
In every material body, the soul is accompanied by the Supreme Soul, also called the Holy Spirit. The Supreme Soul is alongside the individual soul as it reincarnates from one body to another in its very long journey through the material universe. That is why the material body is called the temple of God. Thus, all forms of life are sacred and should never be willfully destroyed or interrupted.
In truth, the living spiritual soul is a tiny fragment, an infinitesimal particle of God, an integral part of His divine person, and exists in all forms of life, celestial beings, human beings, animals, and plants.
It is ignorance of the facts relating to God on the one hand, but also to existential and absolute truth on the other hand, that leads human beings to have abortions.
For example, some foolish people believe that neither animals nor plants have souls. This belief is based on no rational foundation. Animals and plants are indeed bodies in which a soul resides.
It is this absurd mentality that is currently ruining civilization. People have become so morally degraded that they think the embryo has no soul and therefore abort it. But if the egg already has a soul, then all the more so the embryo that develops from the egg. Yes, the embryo does indeed have a soul within it, and abortion is an abominable crime.
God informs us that everyone possesses a soul, and that this soul inhabits all forms of life, celestial, human, animal, and plant.
In reality, it is the spiritual soul that enables the body in which it resides to develop.
The individual soul evolves from a lower body to a higher form; this is what is meant by spiritual evolution. Once the human form is attained, the soul can surrender to the Lord to return to Him, in His eternal and absolute kingdom.
Otherwise, it will remain in this world of matter to undergo the repeated tribulations of birth, sickness, old age, and death. It will then have to be repeatedly reincarnated and suffer each time.
