Noble heads of households pray to God to entrust them with one of His messengers, so that a beneficial influence may be exerted upon society.
This is one valid reason for procreation.
Another motive for highly enlightened parents is to raise a child in Krishna consciousness, so that he or she will not have to return to this wretched world, this world of suffering.
Indeed, parents must ensure that the child they bring forth does not have to return to the womb of a new mother. Unless one can lead their child to liberation or salvation, no one should marry or procreate. If human beings beget children comparable to animals, thus exacerbating disorder within society, the world becomes hellish, just as humanity is today.
In this present age, also called the Iron Age, the Dark Age, or the Dark Age, an age of discord, hypocrisy, quarrels, indifference, decadence, and sin, neither parents nor their children are educated. Both live like animals and know only how to eat, sleep, mate, defend themselves, and satisfy their senses. Such disorder cannot bring peace to humanity.
In other words, we must not engage in sexual activity except for one purpose: to produce good, Krishna-conscious children, and for no other purpose. Human life must be dedicated entirely to the service of the Lord. This is the philosophy of Lord Chaitanya, the Golden Avatar.
Having fulfilled the responsibility of producing a worthy son, we must accept the order of renunciation: detachment from worldly things, disinterest in material pleasures, rejection of objects that arouse sensual gratification, and, quite naturally, rejection of materialism itself, by becoming a hermit, in order to elevate ourselves to the level of the perfect being, the highest perfection of existence.
There are four orders of renunciation, and the perfect being is the highest. The perfect being is free from all envy. At other levels, such as that of family life, competition and envy are present, but because at the level of the perfect being, human activities are entirely devoted to Krishna consciousness—that is, to the service of devotion offered to the Lord—there is no room for envy.
Man is in reality destined to achieve perfect realization in Krishna consciousness. It is not forbidden to live with a wife and have children, but one must conduct one's life in such a way as not to oppose the principles of religion, that is to say, to respect and apply God's precepts, divine commandments, regulating principles (not having illicit sexual relations outside of marriage, not eating meat, fish and eggs, not taking drugs and stimulants such as coffee, tea, cigarettes, alcohol, and not playing games of chance and money), prosperity, regulated satisfaction of the senses and, lastly, liberation, thus putting an end to material existence.
