I am Airavata among the great elephants, and among the aquatic beings, I am Varuna, the lord of the seas. Among all things that heat and illuminate, I am the sun, and among human beings, I am the King.

Among horses, I am Uccaihsrava, and I am gold among metals. I am Yamaraja (the master of destiny and judge of sinners) among those who repress and punish, and among serpents, I am Vasuki.

I am Anantadeva among the finest serpents, and among animals with horns or sharp teeth, I am the lion. Among the social orders, I am the fourth, the order of renunciation (of materialism, of material life…), and among the social divisions, I am the first, the spiritual masters.

Among sacred and flowing things, I am the holy Ganges, and among the still waters, I am The ocean. Among weapons, I am the bow, and among those who wield weapons, I am the Lord of Shiva (Siva).

Among dwellings, I am Mount Sumeru, and among impermeable places, the Himalayas. Among trees, I am the sacred fig tree, and among plants, those that bear seeds.

Among the priests, I am Vasistha Muni, and among those deeply immersed in Vedic culture (the Vedas, the original sacred scriptures), I am Brihaspati. I am Kartikeya among the great military leaders, and among those who progress in higher ways of life, I am the great personality, Lord Brahma.

Among sacrifices, I study the Vedas, and I am non-violence between vows. Among all things that purify, I am wind, fire, sun, water, and speech.

Among the eight progressive states of yoga (yoga: union and communion with the Supreme Being), I am the final stage, samadhi (spiritual ecstasy), the state in which the soul is completely separated from illusion. Among those who desire victory, I am prudent political counsel, and among the discerning processes of experts, I am the science of the soul, by which spirit is distinguished from matter. Among all speculative philosophers, I am the diversity of perception.

Among women, I am Satarupa, and among men, her husband, Svayambhuva Manu. I am Narayana among the sages, and Sanat-Kumara among the spiritual guides.

Among religious principles, I am renunciation, and of all forms of security, I am the awareness of the eternal soul within (every body). Of secrets, I am pleasant speech and silence, and among sexual couples, I am Brahma.

I am the year in the cycles of vigilance, and spring among the seasons. Among the months, I am Margasirsa (November-December), and among the lunar mansions, I am the auspicious Abhijit.
